New York is densely populated and there is a high chance that you will have people in your neighborhood that you are not comfortable with. The best strategy is to try to adjust and ignore petty issues. However, if you feel that you are unable to enjoy the quiet environment of your place, which is a basic right of anyone living in a multi-family building, you can go ahead and take actions against your neighbors, especially if they are staying on rent and do not own the place.
The first thing that you should do is to note down whatever disturbances you are facing. Vague details will not give you much benefit if you want serious steps to be taken in response. This means that you should know exactly what disturbances you faced and when. For example, if your neighbors smoke regularly and excessive amounts of smoke through your ventilators bother you, note the details down. If they hold parties regularly, note down the frequency, the start and end times, and also note down what exactly happened during the party that bothered you. Were they too loud? Were they forcefully borrowing items from you again and again? You should spend a few weeks or at least a month doing this.
The second thing that you should do is to involve others who might be getting affected as well. Ask the people living in their surroundings. The most affected people must be the ones who share a wall with them or those living on different floors of the same land space. If they agree to side with you, you will get witnesses that will further strengthen your case.
After documenting details and talking to other people about it, you should go and talk to these noisy neighbors yourself at first. They might as well stop their unacceptable behavior when they get to know the extent of problems that you as well as others are facing because of them. You should wait for a few weeks to see if they really mend their ways. If they do, you are lucky; but if they do not, then is the time to involve authorities.
If these neighbors do not own the place but are paying rent to stay there, you can find out who the owner of the place is and contact him directly. He might be able to talk to them and resolve the issue. Simultaneously, you can involve the building’s management and any association board that exists. This can be turn out to be very useful as renters are also supposed to follow rules set out by the association and in the case in which they are not followed, they can even be asked to leave the place.
In short, you do not need to worry if you are encountering issues in getting used to intolerable attitude of your neighbors. There are ways to tackle the situation but you will need patience to carry out the correct procedure in order to ensure the best results.
