New York City is not called ‘the city that never sleeps’ for no reason. It is always bustling with life and noise, and if you are living there it may get overwhelming sometimes, especially after a long day when you are trying to settle down for an early night and there is car honks and motorcycle engines coming from outside your window.

Thankfully, there are ways to deal with the noise, and soundproof your house so you can get a good night sleep, and some peace of mind. Some ways to do so are:

1. Windows

There are soundproof windows available, which have more than one glass pane to help block out the outside noise. Not only do they help soundproof your house, but also help in blocking the heat in the summer and the cold in the winter. Of course, depending on how big your apartment or house is, and how many windows there are, the cost may differ, but they are a long-term investment and worth the money.

2. Walls and Ceilings

Noise does not just come from the outside in New York City, especially if you are living in an apartment. Then you have to also deal with your neighbors throwing parties or listening to loud music late at night, and you cannot always file noise complaints or knock on their doors every time the shower is too loud, so it is best to find a solution otherwise. Walls in New York City are usually extremely thin, hence the noise problems. There are ways to make them thicker, by having a layer of drywall added to them. The more layers you have added, the more the noise levels reduce. You should keep in mind that this will make the ceiling lower, and the walls thicker which will take space, but it is highly effective, and worth considering.

3. Floors

A lot of sound travels through floors, especially if you are above or below another apartment, noises from pots and pans clattering, to music can travel and annoy you when you are tired. But there are ways to reduce this sound, for example, you can have layers of insulation added to lessen the noise entering your apartment. If you are renovating your apartment, you can request for concrete slabs to be added between your floors to dampen the sound.

If you do not want to have that much work done to the apartment, or your landlord refuses to allow you to do it, consider adding carpets to your apartment. They will also act as an insulator, and reduce the sound that enters into your apartment, allowing you to rest easily.

Although some of these steps take quite a bit of time and money, if you are planning on living in your home for a while, soundproofing is a smart thing to consider, as it makes your everyday life less stressful and worrisome, and helps you relax in your own home. It creates a comfortable environment for you.
